There are many things that make Maui one of the world’s most popular vacation destinations, including its fantastic weather, colorful beaches (none of which are private), and the fact that it is home to the world’s largest dormant volcano. But did you know that it is also home to some of the world’s best surfing spots? These spots for surfing on Maui are where the professional surfers practice their profession and where the newest surf-related sport, tow-in surfing, was born, and today, we at Maui Life Realty would like to offer a peek into hanging ten in the waters that surround us. Oh, and we would like to remind you that after a day of catching waves, coming home to the comforts and luxuries offered in our surf sanctuaries will ensure that every minute of your stay will make your vacation dreams come true.

All About Surfing on Maui

Whether this is your first time on the board or you have been carving and dropping for more than a minute, there is always something more you can learn about the sport that is known as the sport of kings. Surfing is one of the oldest sports in the world, with stone carvings referencing the sport from as far back as 5000 years ago, but it was during World War II that it reached new levels of interest, due in part to the chemicals created for war purposes that actually advanced the quality of surfboards. The first surf contest was held in 1928, and today the sport is actually a multibillion-dollar industry that offers big cash for the best surfers, with one surf legend actually bringing in $3 million in a year.

Everything You Need

Even if you have been surfing your entire life and already have a very nice surfboard waiting for you at home, it is tough traveling with the awkwardly shaped baggage, and chances are you will want to rent something during your time on Maui. 808 Boards at 3350 Lower Honoapiilani Rd Unit 103, in Lahaina offers a variety of surfboards, paddleboards, snorkel packages, and body boards, ensuring that surfers will easily be able to find everything they need for a day of hanging ten without having to lug their own equipment across the miles.

First Time on the Board?

Surfing isn’t the easiest of sports to learn, but there are many different surf schools in the area that can help guests pick up the skill, including Swell Maui Surf Lessons located in Kihei. Offering beginners classes, long boarding lessons, and group or private classes, visitors will experience a deeper connection with the sea as they learn all there is to know about the sport. Their private lessons are especially great for children who often pick up the sport much faster than grown adults, but the school is also a wonderful way to brush up on your skills if you haven’t been on a board in a very long time. Once you have learned the skills necessary, you probably won’t be ready to face Jaws (keep reading for more information) so we suggest checking out the areas off Kāʻanapali, Lāhainā and Kīhei which still offer amazing waves, but are easier for beginners to navigate.

For the Best of the Best

Although the North Shore of Oahu is legendary for its surfing waves, Maui is also known for  being a great place to surf, with Jaws (Peahi) providing a thrill for the world’s best surfers. Featuring skyscraper sized waves, this spot is not meant for novices, offering a challenge for even the most experienced of surfers and is where tow-in surfing was invented, due to the size of the swells. Also popular with windsurfers, kitesurfers, and even stand-up paddleboarders, the best time to surf this big break will have already passed by the time you read this, as the months from November to March are when the biggest waves break. A Bond movie was filmed here and the best place to watch the action on the waves is at the lookout found at Peahi cliffs.
