Nakalele Blowhole

Experience the power of the ocean at the Nakalele Blowhole Maui, located in Northwest Maui. This natural phenomenon consists of a hole in the rocks at the ocean’s edge that connects to an underground, partially submerged ocean cave. When the waves roll in, water is forced up through the hole, sending an impressively high spray of water into the air. When the waves are big, the blowhole has been known to send jets of water up to 50 feet in the air, creating a truly fantastic sight. Capture amazing photos and simply stand in awe at nature’s power at this top Maui attraction.

Experiencing This Natural Wonder

From the parking area, the viewing point for the Nakalele Blowhole is easily accessible. This viewing area will put you within a safe distance from the blowhole, while still providing excellent views and photo opportunities. This is the option recommended for those traveling with children and for those who do not want to cross rugged, steep terrain to access the blowhole.

Beautiful Nakalele Blowhole Nakalele Blowhole
For those who would prefer to couple this attraction with a hike, another parking area is located just over a half mile away at the start of the Nakalele Blowhole Trail. The Nakalele Blowhole Trail is an unmarked maze of off roading trails that will take you to the Nakalele Blowhole, passing additional sights along the way. The “Acid War Zone” area is known for its interesting rock formations, caused by erosion from the ocean’s saltwater spray. Along this trail to one of the best places to see in Maui, you’ll also pass rugged sea cliffs and scenic tidepools. Once you reach the Nakalele Blowhole, be sure to keep your distance. While it may seem tempting to look inside or feel the water’s spray from up close, the power of this natural phenomenon should not be underestimated. Rogue waves are also common and have proven to be fatal. In total, the hike is 1.25 miles round-trip.
