Makena Beach is part of Makena State Park and is also frequently referred to as Oneloa Beach or Big Beach. Situated between two rocky outcroppings, the beach is usually protected from strong winds. With emerald-green trees and mountains behind, golden sand beneath your feet, and the aqua blue ocean stretched out before you, you’ll quickly see why this beach is a Maui favorite. You’ll also enjoy scenic views of neighboring islands Molokini and Kaho’olawe from your spot on the shore.
Activities at Makena Beach
Thanks to its natural beauty, Makena Beach in Maui is a great place to simply relax and enjoy the views. With little natural shade, bringing along a beach umbrella will provide some respite from the heat. There are often food trucks available here, or you can pack a picnic lunch to be enjoyed along the shoreline. Popular water activities here include swimming, snorkeling, body surfing, stand up paddle boarding, and shore fishing. With a length of 2/3 mile, this is a good beach to enjoy a walk along the shoreline. It is also possible to access the adjacent Little Beach, which is separated by a lava outcropping and connected to Makena Beach by a path.
Visiting Makena Beach
Makena Beach State Park is located along the western shore of East Maui. It is open daily from 5am-7pm. For non-Hawaii residents, there is a $10 parking fee per vehicle. More information can be found on the Department of Land and Natural Resources website under the Division of State Parks.
