Maui Surfing

When vacationing in Hawaii, it’s a given that you’ll spot everyone from beginners to experienced surfers riding the waves. Known as the location that most advanced the sport of surfing, Hawaii is a great place to try this popular water activity. Maui in particular has a wide range of options when it comes to surf breaks, from those that cater well to complete beginners to those that will challenge even seasoned surfers. In addition to accommodating a wide variety of ability levels, gear rentals and lessons are easily accessible, making it easy to spend the day riding the waves. Surfing in Maui just might end up one of your most memorable activities!

Where to Surf in Maui

Beginning surfers will want to be sure to start in a surf area that is known for its gentle waves close to the shore. This will allow for plenty of time to get comfortable with the surfboard before having to maneuver the board through strong breaking waves. One great beginner spot in West Maui is Launiupoko. Located just ten miles south of Lahaina, this family-friendly break offers gentle waves that break just a short distance offshore. Breakwall, located along Lahaina’s Front Street is home to another great beginning Maui surfing locale especially outside of summer months. Ka’anapali Beach is not only one of the island’s most beautiful, but also a top surfing destination. Intermediate surfers can head to Olowalu in West Maui for more challenging breaks.

The size of the swell and time of year are both important factors that should be taken into consideration when determining when and where to surf in Maui. It is always best to check with a lifeguard on the most recent ocean conditions before heading out.
